Key facts
- Women held 24% of energy sector jobs in 2021. In the energy sector women earned on average 85% of the hourly wage earned by men.
- In 2021, 6% of workers in the energy sector identified as Indigenous, 20% identified as members of a visible minority group and 17% identified as immigrants.
- Overall, 6% of Canadian households spent 10% or more of their income on energy in 2019. When households spend 10% or more of their income on energy needs, this is referred to as energy poverty.
- There are 183 communities across Canada that are at least moderately reliant on the energy sector. Of these communities, 80% are rural or remote.
